114: Beware of theological rhetoric and its people

Beware of looking into theological rhetoric and sitting with the people of theological rhetoric [1].

[1] It is reported that Imaam ash-Shaafi’ee (rahimahullah) said, “My ruling regarding the people of theological rhetoric is that they should be beaten with palm branches and shoes and led around the markets an it (should) be said: This is the punishment of those who have abandoned the Book and the Sunnah and taken to theological rhetoric.” Reported by al-Baghaawee in Sharh as-Sunnah (1/218).

Imaam Ahmad (rahimahullaah) said, “A person of theological rhetoric will never succeed. The scholars of theological rhetoric are wicked heretics.” Reported by Ibn al-Jawzee in Manaaqib Ahmad (p204).
